Güéjar Sierra, one of the most beautiful villages in Granada
Güejar Sierra, a small charming town, is located at more than 1000 meters of altitude on the northwestern slope of the Sierra Nevada Natural Park. The town has an interesting history that dates back to the first Muslim settlements and its population later joined the Moorish uprising. After the harsh repression and the expulsion of the Moors, the town underwent a recolonization process and was finally segregated from Granada and obtained its independence as a municipality.
The town is surrounded by high mountains, streams and springs, and is full of archaeological remains and monuments. It is a good place to start excursions to many trails full of history or enjoy traditions with their own character. The Guejar Sierra festivities are from August 15 to 19, being typical for the ribbon races on horseback.
One of the best views of the town can be seen from the El Dornajo Visitors Center and its viewpoint, where you can see views of the town and its secluded squares. In addition, before reaching the town, we can go through the spectacular Canales Reservoir, and contemplate the very special color of its waters that it takes from the nature that surrounds it.
The town is also an excellent starting point for those wishing to explore the trails of the Sierra Nevada, as it is located at the foot of this majestic mountain. From Güejar Sierra, you can make a climb of more than 1,500 meters of unevenness through the Guarnón ravine, lean out into the abyss over the Valdeinfierno ravine and see the masses of Mulhacén and Alcazaba, resting between clouds and brittle peaks, which is a emotion far from the everyday. We can also make a circular route through the municipality of Güejar Sierra in which we can contemplate both the heights of the highest peaks of the Granada mountains and the endless valleys of La Vega.
The temperature in Güejar Sierra is very pleasant during the day, although at night it gets a bit cold, so it is advisable to bring warm clothes. The town is very welcoming and the food is delicious, especially the roast that is served on some days.
In summary, Güejar Sierra is a small town with a great history and a special charm that makes it a perfect place to explore the Sierra Nevada trails or simply to enjoy nature in its splendor and disconnect from the overwhelming city. I highly recommend it. If you plan to visit Granada, don't miss the opportunity to visit this beautiful town and enjoy its panoramic views, delicious food and cozy atmosphere.
